Oracle 11g

July 5, 2007

The launch date for 11g approaches, July 11, 2007.

I think this will be the version of Oracle known for automating the data centre. It is not that the automation features are new in 11g, they are all basically there in 10g but I find that big ideas take a version to really get out there in the marketplace. It is largely a function of Oracle’s short product cycles, it takes time for companies to digest these ideas and a version usually expires in that time frame. Oracle could lengthen the lifecycles a little.

This will also be the last version many companies install. With the rise of “Google computing” and things like Oracle OnDemand, by the time version 12 comes along, many customers will have moved to the OnDemand model. They may well run version 12, but they won’t be installing it, the OnDemand data centre will take care of that.

America’s Cup

July 4, 2007

The 2007 AC is over, with Alinghi retaining the Cup. The Cup match will likely stay in Valencia and and we can start looking forward to the 33rd match in 4 or 5 years. So far, BMW Oracle Racing will be back so we can start watching them again in the next year or two.

For now, congrats to Alinghi.
