Telecommuting and Global Warming

September 27, 2007

With all the focus on global warming and reducing carbon emissions, I am surprised how little attention is given to telecommuting

Telecommuting would seem an obvious way to reduce carbon emissions because, of course, the trip not taken has the lowest emissions of all. Only walking and cycling can match it. Depending how it is powered, transit may come close but unlike a big transit project, no big infrastructure outlay is required. In most cases no new infrastructure is needed at all, with the high penetration of high-speed internet access in Canada.

This is such a low-impact, low-cost way to reduce carbon emissions, why so much silence? Governments at all levels should be promoting it heavily, especially since it costs the government almost nothing.

With modern communications we no longer need to herd office workers into one place. We can still debate whether Canada really needs to do anything about global warming but it we are going to do it, this is a good place to start.
